The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) has backed screening only for men with BRCA1 or BRCA2 variants. This does not go far enough.

In its draft recommendation, the UK NSC has advised introducing a BRCA-only screening programme – while hundreds of thousands of Black men and men with a family history, who face some of the highest risks of prostate cancer.

We fundamentally disagree.

The Committee’s analysis doesn’t reflect modern evidence or practice. It has fixated on potential harms that today’s diagnostic pathways have already dramatically reduced, while under-weighting the very real and well-documented benefits of early detection, most especially for those at highest risk.

By excluding these groups, today’s decision risks entrenching inequalities for another generation.

Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men and the second biggest male cancer killer. Limiting screening to a small subset of high-risk men means more late diagnoses, more families shattered, and more lives lost unnecessarily.

But it’s not too late. The Government can still ensure screening is extended to all high-risk men.

We’re calling on Wes Streeting and the Government to urgently review this recommendation, reassess all the evidence, and commit to a comprehensive targeted screening programme for every man at highest risk – Black men, men with a family history, and BRCA variant carriers.

If we act now, we can save lives.

We won’t stop fighting until every man gets the early diagnosis he deserves.
